Behind the Baton: Spotlight on David Agius - Antes Insurance Brokers
For many of us, music is something we turn to for relaxation. For David Agius, it’s a way of life. By day, David is a Senior Manager within our Corporate & Advisory Division, supporting a diverse client base and leading teams with a steady hand. After hours, he transforms into a maestro - a band conductor and composer whose passion for music began at the tender age of seven.
“My dad’s friend suggested I take music lessons at the local band club. That was the start of it all,” David recalls.
From clarinet player to conductor, and from local performances to international competitions, David’s musical journey has been nothing short of inspiring. He holds music degrees from prestigious institutions such as the London College of Music and the Royal Schools of Music. One of his proudest moments? Leading his band to second place in an overseas band competition, competing against top international ensembles.
David has also composed several well-known marches, many of them inspired by the character of the individuals they are named after. His musical works range from solemn cantatas, such as those performed in Zabbar and Mqabba, to innovative compositions like Musical Impressions, performed at the Manoel Theatre and blending harp with wind band.
Despite his deep musical commitments, David remains fully dedicated to his professional role. “It takes a lot of sacrifice,” he says. “I practise music after hours, but conducting has taught me valuable leadership skills that I apply in my work at Antes.”
Those who work closely with David often see the parallels between his two worlds. Conducting a 60-piece band is, in many ways, not so different from managing a high-performing team, both require vision, coordination, and the ability to bring out the best in each individual.
So where would David conduct his dream concert? “Schonbrunn Palace or Carnegie Hall — both for their magnificent acoustics,” he says with a smile.
Whether on stage or in the boardroom, David’s dedication, passion, and leadership shine through. His story is a reminder that our talents and interests outside of work enrich the way we lead and support others, both professionally and personally.
