Beyond Compliance: Lara Michelle’s Passion for Maltese Language, Acting, and Storytelling - Antes Insurance Brokers
At first glance, Lara Michelle’s role as Compliance Officer and MLRO at Antes Insurance Brokers might suggest a world of policies, procedures, and regulation. But beyond the structured frameworks and legal requirements, Lara Michelle is a vibrant creative force—an actress, poet, and passionate advocate for the Maltese language.
Lara Michelle’s journey into the performing arts began in childhood. Role-playing and storytelling were favourite pastimes, and she knew early on that she belonged on stage. After completing her law degree, she followed her heart and enrolled in a three-year drama course with Freespirit Acting. “To me, acting is another form of artistic expression,” she says. “It allows you to step into different characters and challenge yourself.”
Among her proudest theatrical moments was her leading role in Romeo Se Jiġġennen Għax Ġuljetta Ma Tridx Tbennen, where she had to memorise 70 pages of script and switch between two characters—complete with 17 costume changes. She also fondly recalls the recognition she received at the 2020 Cospicua Short Play Festival, where her performance earned a special jury award.
Outside the spotlight, Lara Michelle is equally passionate about the written word. A regular contributor to Sagħtar magazine—a Maltese publication filled with educational and entertaining content for children—she uses poetry to connect with young readers. “Poetry is a space where I can express myself through the art of words,” she says. “It helps children learn Maltese in a fun, engaging way.”
Her love for the Maltese language runs deep. She’s worked as a journalist, radio newscaster, lyricist, and contributor to online platforms like Isma’ Ftit and Għidli Mitejn. In 2021, she penned the lyrics for the Christmas song Il-Prietka tal-Abbati and three original songs featured in a short play festival.
But how does she balance her demanding compliance role with her creative outlets? “It’s not always easy,” Lara Michelle admits. “I work on a reduced basis to maintain balance, and I’m fortunate to have a supportive team. Rehearsals, filming, and script preparation require a lot of time, but the rewards make it all worthwhile.”
Interestingly, the skills she’s developed through acting and writing enhance her work at Antes. “Acting sharpened my attention to detail and helped me become more confident when delivering staff training,” she explains. “Writing allows me to communicate complex requirements clearly and creatively.”
To those juggling career goals and artistic interests, Lara Michelle’s advice is simple: “Treat both as valuable parts of your identity. Your creative and professional paths can inform and enrich each other.”
And in case you thought she was all theatre and regulation, Lara Michelle also hits the gym twice a week and once played competitive table tennis for 14 years. Truly, she’s proof that passion, discipline, and creativity can thrive side by side.
